Hoffmann has to be one of my favourite authors and The Sandman is one of my favourite of Hoffmann’s stories, it is also the most famous.

I had my eyes on it for a while my plan was to read in German back when I had to read some German novels; glad I didn’t read it back then though, because a I don’t know that much German sandmwn b I think it’s even better in English I can’t compare it though, but I mean that I understand it now more I think than when I read it in German.

The lawyers called it a hogfmann subtle deception, and the more culpable, inasmuch as he had planned it so artfully against the public hodfmann not a single soul – a few cunning students excepted – had detected it, although all now wished to play the wiseacre, and referred to various facts which had appeared to them suspicious.
Coppelius begins taking “shining masses” out of the fire and hammering them into face-like shapes without eyes. He was, however, obliged to leave the university, because Nathaniel’s story had created a sensation, and it was universally considered a quite unpardonable trick to smuggle a wooden doll into respectable tea-parties in place of a living person – for Olympia had been quite a success at tea-parties. I seemed to catch a glimpse of human faces lying around without any eyes – but with deep holes instead.
Nathaniel’s heart trembled within him, but remembering what Spalanzani had told him about his compatriot Coppola, and also the firm promise he had made to Clara with respect to the Sandman Coppelius, he felt ashamed of his childish fear and, collecting himself with all his might, said as softly and civilly as possible: Nathaniel felt as though a heavy and oppressive burden had been rolled away, as though by resisting the dark power that held him fast he had saved his whole being, which had been threatened with annihilation.
This is so many kinds of disturbing that nightmares are inevitable. If you do not want to know the plot then do not read all of the text. NO, by rights I should have read no farther, but should have handed over the letter to my brother.
In a letter to his friend Lothario, Nathaniel tells of a recent meeting with a barometer salesman, called Coppola, that has upset him. As soon as the spectacles were removed Nathaniel felt quite easy and, samdman of Clara, perceived that the hideous phantom was but the creature of his own mind, that this Coppola was an honest optician and could not possibly be the accursed double of Coppelius.
About the title story only The decline into madness was also interesting; I kept seeing the repetitive things Nathanael would say in the last page or two and his almost mechanical and involuntary actions and being reminded of Olimpia’s ‘words’ that never changed. Often I sneaked from my room to the corridor when my mother had passed, but never could I discover anything; for the Sandman had always gone in at the door when I reached the place where I might have seen him. I darted into my father’s room; the door was open, a suffocating smoke rolled towards me, and the servant girl cried: For assuredly you were thinking of me most intently when, designing to send your last letter to my brother Lothaire, you directed it to me instead of to him.
